We love road trips. Love ‘em! We visited a few very cool cities on this trip. Madison, Wisconsin – a cool university city and the capital of Wisconsin. We enjoyed some delicious brats and deep-fried cheese curds there with some local craft beer. Minneapolis, Minnesota – birthplace of Prince and hometown of Husker Du (one of the coolest bands ever). We went to an afternoon Twin’s game so Minneapolis will also be remembered as the city Elfreda watched her very first Major League baseball game. From Minneapolis we headed to Fargo, North Dakota. We love Fargo the movie and the TV show so this one was a bit of a bucket list visit. Not that anything from either the movie or the show actually took place in the city. It’s a fast-growing small city and also had some cool spots to visit. From there we headed to Winnipeg for a few days and visited Canadian Museum for Human Rights.
The highlights of the trip by far were our stays in Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota and Custer State Park in South Dakota. Theodore Roosevelt National Park was simply incredible! Before we even left, the one thing we knew would be the absolute highlight for us on the whole trip would be to see the wild Bison, the largest land animals in North America. They are magnificent animals. It was incredible to see the herds of them roaming throughout Theodore Roosevelt National Park. We also were able to see more of them when we visited Custer State Park in South Dakota. We saw so many different animals in Theodore Roosevelt and Custer – pronghorn antelopes, elk, deer, feral horses, wild donkeys, and many many prairie dogs.
During our stay in Custer we also visited Mount Rushmore National Memorial and drove the Needles highway. The drive along the highway with its sharp turns, low tunnels and granite spires was more impressive to us than Mount Rushmore. It’s such a beautiful drive and the natural landscape of the area makes it very hard to concentrate on the road. Definitely one of the most stunning drives we’ve ever done in Canada or the U.S.
Hope you enjoy our road trip photos!
